LECTURE RECORDINGS & FERPA

As classroom technologies continue to evolve, and especially during times when remote or hybrid classes are necessary, more instructors are using video and audio recordings of class sessions, projects and educational events.

Recordings are used to allow students to watch a missed class session or to review an earlier session they attended, to share with another currently-enrolled class or a future class, or for accreditation purposes. Depending on how the recordings are created and edited, they may include personally identifiable information (PII) about students and thus constitute education records that are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) — the federal student privacy law.

These FAQs provide guidelines for acceptable practices in making and using video and audio recordings in the classroom setting. Additional information about photos, video, and audio recording under FERPA can be found on the U.S. Department of Education web page: FAQs on Photos and Videos under FERPA

May a recording that includes student participation be posted for future students to view or listen to?

  • Yes. If access is limited to other students in the class, FERPA does not limit or prevent such a recording’s use and does not require obtaining written consent. This allows instructors to create access for students in the class to watch or rewatch past class sessions.

READ DISCLOSURE

All of our LIVE lectures are recorded and later edited and enhanced for the best viewing and learning experience.  Our LIVE lectures are interactive during certain scheduled points to mimic a real in-person classroom with educator and student interactions.  In some lectures, students or other attendees may be briefly recorded and later show up on the edited recording.  To maintain student/attendee privacy and to have a smoother experience when viewing a recorded lecture, we limit the interactions in the official recordings.  If you do sign-up for a LIVE lecture (and attend), you acknowledge/consent that you may be recorded.  120Compressions may utilize recordings to promote and market education on social media and other such avenues.  Interaction during LIVE lectures is not only encouraged but recommended.  As a student/attendee you can wait until the end of the lecture to ask questions, or utilize the chat box during the lecture if you do not want to be recorded.
